Majors, Minors & Curriculum

The Math Department offers flexible degree programs that students can tailor to their individual interests. We offer a B.A. and a B.S. in Mathematics as well as a B.S. in Applied Mathematics. A statistics concentration may be added to any of these degrees. Applied math majors have many other possible concentrations as well (see the complete list below). Also, students majoring in a different subject can increase their preparation for graduate school or their marketability in industry by minoring in Math, Applied Math, or Statistics.

Applied Mathematics Mathematics Statistics
Applied mathematics uses results from pure mathematics to model real world problems in areas such as physics, chemistry, biology, and economics. The subject is very interdisciplinary in nature, so students become proficient in computer programming and at least one other discipline. In the words of Albert Einstein, “pure mathematics is the poetry of logical ideas ”. The subject straddles the border between art and pure reason. It includes fascinating topics such as Number Theory, Geometry and Topology, and Logic. Although pure mathematicians are not immediately concerned about applications, results they have proven have been put to practical use by physicists, economists, and computer scientists. The department of mathematics offers concentrations in statistics and actuarial science. These areas of study open the door to employment and research in areas such as medicine, finance, and government agencies. Most applied mathematics concentrations can be paired with a statistics concentration.
