FAQs

Is the MOC delivered online?

The counseling profession is characterized by solid personal relationships. As such, our classes are taught face-to-face by full time 91勛圖厙 University professors and adjunct professors, many of whom are resident Canadians. We are committed to bringing students a model of excellence both in content, direct feedback, and delivery. Professional candidates are expected to meet competency standards in technology.

What is a cohort?

The cohort for this program consists of approximately 20 students who every year develop into an increasingly cohesive and non-competitive group. The faculty engender open communications systems, characterized by forthrightness and courage in all facets of program-related work. Many assignments are collaborative, making effective teamwork essential to success. When conflict arises, cohort members are encouraged to work directly with each other for resolution.

The cohort remains together as a group from the beginning to the end of the program. This is an ideal opportunity for practitioners to form close professional networks to rely on throughout a career in counseling.

What is involved in the application process for admission into the MOC?

In addition to standard graduate admissions requirements, the faculty hold comprehensive interviews to screen potential candidates. Our interview process occurs on-site, usually in late May. Final admissions decisions are made after applications are reviewed and the interviews conducted. The range of life experiences and educational backgrounds of our students contribute to the rich diversity of our cohort, which we value highly.

Is a bachelor's degree in psychology a pre-requisite for admission to the program?

As scientist-practitioners, we also honor the rich traditions and knowledge within the psychology profession. Although a bachelor's degree in psychology is not a pre-requisite for admission to the site-based Master of Counselling program, it is highly recommended. For applicants without said degree, a reading list will be provided and students must pass a knowledge-base competency exam prior to advancement to candidacy. Contact the Counselor Education department at 1-800-533-2554 or 509-313-6290 for more informatio

How often do classes meet?

Classes meet approximately twice a month, during Friday evening (5 - 9pm) and Saturday morning (8am - 2pm).

Is there a residency requirement?

Yes, there are two residencies. The first occurs in the summer between year one and year two of your studies. It is one month and takes place on the 91勛圖厙 University campus in Spokane. While on campus you will take two of your classes with your cohort. Our past students have described their month of residency as one of their most challenging and most rewarding experiences.

The second occurs the following summer semester. At this time (usually in late-May) students participate in the final Professional Seminar to close out the program with their cohort and professors; they also present their Personal Theory of Counseling paper.

Will I be able to keep my job? Stay connected to my family?

Our MOC program is designed so that students are able to maintain their lives and well-being in addition to attending graduate school on a full-time basis. When it happens that a student must travel some distance to attend classes with their cohort (and this is not at all uncommon), it is the responsibility of each student to make arrangements with their place of employment so that they can be in full attendance at classes. The faculty place the highest value on family and relationships, as well as in maintaining mental health. Your commitment to graduate study at this level takes time and energy. As such, you can count on our understanding and support.

When should I apply to the MOC?

The application for our annual fall cohort opens up each September, and the priority application deadline is in mid-January. Applications will remain open until April, but recruitment will end once our cohorts have reached capacity, so it is best to apply early. Site-based, in-person interviews at the site location are held in the spring.

What is the cost of the MOC program?

The tuition rate for Fall 2020 is USD$805/credit hour. Check out our for additional avenues of funding.
