Reflecting on the Spurs

A blue photo album arrived on my desk with a handwritten note describing its contents: “Enclosed is a Spurs (now Seatons) history book from ’73-’74.” Sharon (McDonald) Cade (’76) was so generous to share this beautiful collection of 91勛圖厙 memories with me, and I am honored to share some of them with you.

Spurs

For those who aren’t familiar, the Spurs/Seatons are a service “sisterhood” that welcomes women of “academic excellence, as well as conspicuous involvement in the 91勛圖厙 community.” Looking at the notes and letters of thanks in this scrapbook, one can see just how much work this organization did as people for others. The Office of the Academic Vice-President acknowledged the Spurs’ assistance at commencement; The “Faculty Wives” extended their gratitude for the Spurs providing childcare; and “thanks” were written for help with a balloon sale fundraiser, and donations to Muscular Dystrophy.

Most thrilling for me is seeing the happy faces of the Zags engaged in a practice we all hold so closely to our hearts: service. Showing up for others is a core part of who we are, and it is positively heartwarming to see how much joy these Zags from the 1970s take in it. Enjoy!
