Step by Step Insurance Process for New Students

If you are a new student at 91³Ô¹ÏÍø or if you have recently changed insurance, please be sure to follow each of the steps below to ensure you have coverage in Spokane and that your information is up-to-date with the University.

Step 1: Acquiring Health Insurance

If you already have a health insurance plan, please skip to Step 2!

If you do not currently have health insurance, we strongly recommend you pursue getting this coverage.  Having a health insurance plan is not required for enrollment at 91³Ô¹ÏÍø, but it is highly encouraged. We have resources that will help you find insurance options that best fit your circumstances available on the pages below.

Step 2: Determine Your Coverage Level in Spokane

For those students who are not from the Spokane area, this is a critical step.  To determine what level of coverage you have in Spokane, please be sure to take the following actions:

  • Call your insurance company.
  • Let them know that you or your student will be in the Spokane area for school.
  • Ask your insurance company what levels of coverage you or your student will have in the Spokane area.  Determine if there are specific providers who are in-network in Spokane under your insurance plan.
    • You do not need insurance to be seen at Health & Counseling Services and you may not ever need this information, but it's always best to plan ahead.
    • This is particularly important for our Californian students, as plans from that state tend to have limited coverage in our area.

Step 3: Have a Copy of Your Insurance Information

We strongly recommend that students keep a copy of their health insurance information on them.  Our recommended approach:

Take a picture of your health insurance and prescription cards (front and back) and keep it on your phone!

You will need this information at various points in your college career, so it's best to have it where we know our students will keep it handy.  Other good suggestions:

  • If you have a physical card, keep it in your wallet.
  • Make a copy (front and back) and keep it with other important papers.
  • Make sure a family member or your emergency contact has a copy or a photo on their phone as well, just in case you lose the card or your wallet.

Step 4: Provide Your Insurance Information to Health & Counseling Services

Your New Student Health Forms ask for your insurance information as well as a copy of your insurance card.  Please be sure to provide this information. It is important to have on hand in the event of an emergency or if we need to order diagnostic tests in the event of an illness or injury.  (Please note, insurance is not required to be seen at Health & Counseling Services.)

Each time you visit Health & Counseling Services, we will ask if you have updated insurance information, just to be sure we are able to best support your health and well-being.

If we need to diagnostic tests or refer you to a specialist, we will be mindful of your insurance plan and work with you to reduce costs and connect you with coverage in your network, whenever possible.

Step 5: Understand How Insurance works at Health & Counseling Services

There are two important components to this step:

First, all on-campus undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students are enrolled in a Mandatory Accident & Injury plan as part of their tuition and fees.  This plan supplements your primary health insurance and provides coverage for accidents and injuries that occur during school-sponsored activities.

Second, Health & Counseling does not process health insurance in our office.  It is important to understand how this process works and how you can submit claims to your insurance company for reimbursement.

More information on both of these components is available below.
