Senior Design Projects

Sample Senior Design Projects

All engineering seniors participate in a year-long team project that combines a real project with a diverse group of experienced professionals. No two projects are alike! Below are sample projects from recent years.
big mack

Multi-Station Wear Tester

Challenge: Design and fabricate a tribometer with multiple stations for simultaneous testing of material friction and lubricants.
Design: "Big Mack' can test four individual "stacks" of materials with up to 250N of force for at least 48 hours. Live force readings are made by the fabricated S-type load cells on each stack.

Metallic Seal Stretch-Former

Sponsor: Jetseal
Challenge: Create a semi-automated machine to form non-circular metal seals repeatedly, needed for aerospace and nuclear industries.
Design: Prototype is driven by a stepper motor with a lead screw on an aluminum track frame. It is controlled through a Raspberry Pi and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).

Concert for the Deaf

Challenge: Give the deaf and hard-of-hearing a more-valuable experience at concerts by creating devices which attach to musical instruments and respond to the music with a visual display.
Design: Devices pick up frequencies and respond with lights; brightness levels respond to the instrument's volume levels.

partial map of campus

Bringing Netherland’s Sustainable Practices to GU

Challenge: Use suggestions from the 91³Ô¹ÏÍø in Delft Sustainability course to address issues in transportation, water management, and building energy on campus.
Design: Seven concepts for North Astor and Cataldo Way include stormwater infiltration basins, green facades, bicycle and pedestrian priority areas.

Bank Fee Analytics System

Sponsor: Treasury4
Challenge: Create a Bank Fee Analytics (BFA) tool to track bank fees for companies across different banks and bank accounts.
Design: An end-to-end solution starting with an account analysis statement upload, ending with PowerBI dashboard displays.

bridge

West Seattle Bridge

Challenge: Explore probable causes of the West Seattle Bridge cracks in its main span box girders, determine solution to restore use of the bridge, develop a concept analysis.
Design: Perform a business case study to evaluate two alternatives, research code requirements and explore material sustainability.

spirometer

Incentive Spirometer

Sponsor: Lung Technologies LLC
Challenge: Integrate new features into a tool to strengthen lung capacity of patients before and after surgery.
Product: 3-D printed prototype with electronic components to deliver reminders to patients, display targets, and give positive reinforcements.
