What Can I Do with an English Degree

The English major offers flexibility and relevance. You’ll study diverse voices; the power of language; and traditions, and have opportunities to explore current issues and ideas and to connect them historically, culturally, and critically. English majors are trained to be solvers of complex, unstructured problems. You will develop skills in listening, humanizing, navigating complex information, and the ability to shift focus from data to values.

Haley Swanson, '14, is pursuing graduate studies at the Columbia University School of Journalism. She is currently an associate editor at Harper Collins. Her essays have appeared in The Rumpus, Electric Literature, Glamour, Brevity, Creative Nonfiction, PANK, and elsewhere. With Eliza Smith, she's co-editor of the anthology Sex and the Single Girl: Reinventing Helen Gurley Brown's Cult Classic (Harper Perennial, 2022). She's also working on a memoir about female obsession and women who travel alone as told through her time abroad.

Daniel Hodge, '17, is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Education at University of California, Irvine, after completing a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Notre Dame. He is also an ACE Teaching Fellow in a Santa Ana, California middle school.
