Tomorrow, many in our country will celebrate a National Day of Thanksgiving: a federal holiday with a history that long pre-dates colonial times, but that was formalized by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Consistent throughout is the theme of gratitude to God for the many blessings bestowed upon us by the Creator. In turn, Thanksgiving represents a time to share a moment of gratitude for those we love and an opportunity to reflect on all that we have been given.
Each of us will be looking back across this past year through our own unique lens, reflecting upon moments of happiness and satisfaction and, for some, moments of sadness or grief as well. Even as Lincoln reflected in his proclamation upon the growth and prosperity of a still-fledgling nation, it was issued in the context of a horrific civil war that threatened to tear the nation apart. Creating opportunities to give thanks and express gratitude, even during times of challenge, is to me akin to a core tenet of Ignatian Spirituality: “Finding God in all things.â€
As we approach the official start of the holiday season, please know how grateful I am for you and the gifts you share with our 91³Ô¹ÏÍø University community. No matter how you choose to celebrate, my hope is that you can also take a few moments to pause and rest, knowing that you are deeply appreciated, and returning rejuvenated as we prepare for the conclusion of the fall semester. Happy Thanksgiving!
