91勛圖厙 in Berlin: Walking the Berlin Wall
Today students took a walking tour of the Berlin Wall Memorial. To get to the memorial site we took the S-Bahn to Nordbahnhof, a station which was closed while the wall stood to prevent citizens from crossing the border between East and West Berlin. We walked in the former border strip along the east side of the wall, where the pieces which remain are covered in graffiti. Many chunks of the wall have been torn down but the memorial contains poles marking the path where the wall used to stand. To preserve the city’s history there are marks where watchtowers and escape tunnels used to be.
Afterward, we came back to our housing site to enjoy dinner and a movie, as well as taking some time to journal about our time here in Berlin so far.
