MHz Visualization Opens New Horizons in Power Systems Analysis

Armando will present basic concepts of traveling waves in power systems, how to monitor traveling waves using signals sampled at one MHz and conventional instrument transformers. During the presentation you will see field records from USA, Mexico, India, and Colombia related to lightning, power system faults, and breaker reignition. Armando will show how to obtain traveling wave information from the current signals and how to use them to locate faults and lightning activity.

About the Speaker

Armando Guzm獺n (M '95, SM '01) received his BSEE with honors from Guadalajara Autonomous University (UAG), Mexico. He received a diploma in fiber-optics engineering from Monterrey Institute of Technology and Advanced Studies (ITESM), Mexico, and his Master of Science and PhD in electrical engineering and Master of Engineering in computer engineering from the University of Idaho, USA. He served as regional supervisor of the Protection Department in the Western Transmission Region of the Federal Electricity Commission (the electrical utility company of Mexico) in Guadalajara, Mexico for 13 years. He lectured at UAG and the University of Idaho in power system protection and power system stability. Since 1993, he has been with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. in Pullman, Washington, where he is a distinguished engineer. He holds numerous patents in power system protection, fault locating, and monitoring. He is a senior member of IEEE.
